The Light House at Oswego. |
We sailed out of Oswego, New York at 7:00 onto Lake Ontario bound for the St Lawrence Seaway. I didn't sleep too well last night thinking about the trip - 1) A brand new crew. 2) The weather forecast was calling for possible thunderstorms. 3) the average depth of the Erie Canal was 12 feet and width was 85 feet....... the average depth of this part of Lake Ontario is 480 feet and we were traveling 55 miles across the center of the lake. We averaged around 8.7 MPH on the Canal, We averaged close to 12 MPH across the lake today. We arrived in the St Lawrence at 11:30 ( and burned close to 100 gallons of fuel)
Traveling through the 1,000 Islands region of the St Lawrence is spooky. We passed through 60 foot wide channels with boulders on either side and a water depth of 110 feet !!! After docking at the Gananoque Muni Marina (say that 3 times) in Gananoque Ontario I called the Canadian Customs to report our presence in Canada. This is always a little nerve wracking as I have never had good luck with any law enforcement agency. Everything went fine and we docked for the night here.
Denny and Mike dropped the tender to try fishing (Mike got a 26 inch Northern Pike and Denny got a 5 inch Perch) While Rick and I struggled to assemble my new gas grill.
Tucker seems to be OK with the new crew. |
Ghost ship of Lake Ontario. |
Denny got up and Tucker just kept on sleeping. |
Odd, we didn't see this guy on the Erie Canal. |
Classic 1,000 Islands scenery. |
We had to go between those islands and the water was 110 feet deep there with shoals on either side. |
Damn grill !!!! |
Hey Dick, where's the plug??? |
Hooray for Rick, we might actually get dinner. |
How does this damn thing attach again. |
Success !!!! |
Met a new friend from Calgary. |
Dinner is on. |
That blue paint in the dinghy sure looks nice...someone with good taste must've picked it out :)
