The tortoise and the hare.

Which way do we go George, which way do we go ????

We left dock at 7:30 in a dense fog. This was a new one for the crew and they were a bit nervous. "No problem" I explained, "We will navigate by instruments".  Apparently they were under the impression I had performed this before, and since it seemed to calm them down I saw no reason to say otherwise. Everything was going fine until a 20 foot bass boat appeared out of the fog going like a bat out of hell straight at us. I hit the horn and he veered away. "Whew that was close" Denny said and then another appeared and another. We were in the middle of a fishing tournament the apparently started from up river and all the fish were down river. We estimate that we dodged over a hundred bass boats going full tilt out of the fog in the next 1/2 hour. Not far down river we came upon a large Canadian Coast Guard Ship lowering a rescue boat from her decks. I am sure they got a lot of practice that day.

We passed through two lift bridges before noon and reached the Beauhauois twin locks at 12:30. We had to wait at the lock with a speed boat while an ocean vessel was locking up. Just before we entered the lock a little 22 foot sail boat came puttsing into view at about 3 MPH (it had a 5 HP outboard motor). The little sail boat entered the lock with us and we waved to them when we left the lock. The river current was with us and we had a tail wind so we were really moving along. The speed boat left us in its wake. We traveled another 5 hours that day and passed through four more locks. At each lock we waited for ocean vessels to pass and at each lock the little sail boat would putts up after we waited 1/2 hour for the lock to open. We we docked for the night the little sail boat passed us by and waved.

Don't worry fella's, I know how to handle a little fog....?

Fog, what fog??

Narrow miss. One of a hundred.

Notice who Denny is smiling at?

A friendly French Lockmaster giving us a French one finger wave goodbye.

  1. Captain West,
A mighty rugged crew you have there sir. I must say I enjoy going through the pictures of you and your brothers. We ladies can appreciate looking at handsome males, and I must confess my heart goes to Tucker.
